Αν μιλάμε για τη Λατινική Αμερική αυτές τις μέρες, πιθανότατα η Κούβα έρχεται πρώτα στο μυαλό μας. Για το λόγο αυτό, το σημερινό μας εικονικό μουσικό ταξίδι θα μας πάει εκεί, με τους ήχους της θρυλικής Buena Vista Social Club.

Η Buena Vista Social Club είναι μια κουβανέζικη μπάντα, το όνομα της οποίας είναι εμπνευσμένο από μια Λέσχη που υπήρξε στην δεκαετία του ’40 στην Αβάνα. Δημιουργήθηκε το 1996 από τον Κουβανό μουσικό Juan de Marcos Gonzalez και τον Αμερικανό κιθαρίστα Ry Cooder, αλλά συμμετείχαν επίσης παραδοσιακοί Κουβανοί μουσικοί, οι οποίοι είχαν παίξει ή τραγουδήσει στην αρχική Λέσχη: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer και Ruben Gonzalez, μεταξύ άλλων.

Ο δίσκος της μπάντας ήταν μια μεγάλη επιτυχία, και ενέπνευσε τον Γερμανό σκηνοθέτη Wim Wenders, ο οποίος κατέγραψε δύο συναυλίες στο Άμστερνταμ και στη Νέα Υόρκη, συνεντεύξεις με τους μουσικούς, μαζί με εικόνες της Αβάνα για ένα ντοκιμαντέρ, που ονομάστηκε επίσης Buena Vista Social Club.

Τόσο ο δίσκος όσο και το ντοκιμαντέρ ξεκίνησαν αυτό που πολλοί ονόμασαν “Cubamania», εμπνέοντας πολλούς ανθρώπους να εξοικειωθούν με την κουβανέζικη μουσική και τον χορό salsa. Αν και η αρχική μπάντα έπαιξε ζωντανά μόνο δύο φορές, ορισμένα μέλη της αρχικής ομάδας (Guajiro Mirabal, Aguaje Ramos και Barbarito Torres) συνεχίσουν να εκτελούν από κοινό ως μέρος της Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, ενώ η Omara Portuondo και ο Eliades Ochoa έχουν τo δικό τους συγκρότημα.

Εδώ είναι λοιπόν, το προσωπικό μου φόρο τιμής στην Αβάνα και στο Buena Vista Social Club με αυτή την καταπληκτική συναυλία στο Carnegie Hall της Νέας Υόρκης …

If we talk about Latin America these days, most likely Cuba comes first to our minds. For that reason, our virtual musical trip today will take us there, with the sounds of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club.

Buena Vista Social Club is a Cuban band, whose name was inspired by a 1940’s member club in La Havana. It was created in 1996 by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder, but included as well traditional Cuban musicians, who had performed at the original Club: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Ruben Gonzalez, among others.

The recording of this band was a great success, and inspired German director Wim Wenders, who captured two live concerts in Amsterdam and New York, interviews to the musicians together with images of La Havana for a documentary, also named Buena Vista Social Club.

Both the recording and the documentary started what many called “Cubamania”, inspiring people to get acquainted with cuban music and salsa dance. Although the original band only performed live twice, some members of the original group (Guajiro Mirabal, Aguaje Ramos and Barbarito Torres) continue to perform together as a part of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, while Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa have their own group.

Here it goes then, my personal tribute to La Havana and Buena Vista Social Club with this amazing live presentation at the Carnegie Hall of New York…
