Tango is elegant, sensual, passionate, romantic, melancholic… Many films have included tango scenes to express some of these feelings… Check out my list of the 10 best tango scenes in movies:

1. TANGO (1998)

If you love tango you will certainly enjoy this movie about love, ageing, power… and lots of tango. This Argentinean film directed by Spanish Carlos Saura, includes many beautiful tango scenes. I chose the one where internationally-acclaimed tango dancer Juan Carlos Copes dances with Cecilia Narova Argentina’s quintessential tango, La Cumparsita.

2. MOULIN ROUGE! (2001)

Lovers of traditional tango may not like this one, but for me El tango de Roxanne is a beautiful ode to love, jealousy and despair. The amazing choreography and the unique, harsh voice of the “Unconscious Argentinean” Jacek Koman -together with Ewan McGregor and José Feliciano- make it a truly unforgettable gem. El tango de Roxanne is a actually a mix of The Police’s “Roxanne” with Mariano Mores’ classic tango “Tanguera”.

3. TAKE THE LEAD (2006)

In this based-on-a-true-story movie of a dance teacher who believed in the talent of a group of problematic kids, Antonio Banderas and Katya Virshilas manage to leave open-mouthed the initially apathetic students while they dance the super sensual “Así se baila el tango” (This is how tango is danced) performed by Bailongo!, with the sultry voice of Verónica Verdier.

4. SCENT OF A WOMAN (1992)

This lovely scene where blind Frank (Al Pacino) dances with Donna (Gabrielle Anwar) “Por una cabeza” has remained as an all-time classic in the history of cinematography. This tango has been featured in several other movies, maybe the best known is True Lies, where Arnold Schwarzenegger dances it with Tia Carrere, but Scent of a Woman’s scene is still my preferred one… “Por una cabeza” means “by a head” (refers to a horse winning a race by one head) and the lyrics describe a man’s addiction to horse-track gambling and to women. It is a classic Argentinean tango written by Argentina’s most prominent tango figure, Carlos Gardel. In this film is performed by The Tango Project.

5. SHALL WE DANCE (2004)

In this romantic comedy -actually a remake of Japanese Shall we dansu?– Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) teaches John (Richard Gere) to follow the lead while they dance “Santa María (del Buen Ayre)” performed by the great electronic tango band Gotan Project.

6. THE TANGO LESSON (1997)

This semi-biographic story of Sally Potter and tango dancer Pablo Verón is a beautiful, artistic metaphor of life and relationships paralleled to tango dance. I chose the scene where Sally dances -together with three partners- “Libertango”, an emblematic tango by the master of New Tango, Astor Piazzolla.

7. FADING GIGOLO (2013)

I loved this “Let’s see what you can do” scene where gigolo Fioravante (John Turturro) dances with his client Selima (Sofía Vergara) the beautiful New tango chill “Reflejo de Luna” (Reflection of the moon) performed by the Spanish band Alacrán.

8. EASY VIRTUE (2008)

A very elegant tango scene with stunning Jessica Biel and always amazing Colin Firth dancing the Easy Virtue Tango performed by Sophie Solomon, Perry Montague Mason and Ian Watson with The Easy Virtue Orchestra.

A stylish, surreal setting for Kirsten Dunst and Pablo Verón who dance traditional Stamponi’s tango El último café (The last coffee) performed by the legendary Roberto Goyeneche.

Robert Duvall and -ex real-life girlfriend- Luciana Pedraza dance the melancholic Last tango with Manuela in this movie where an aged hitman assigned for a job in Argentina gets passionated with tango.

10 ΓΑΛΛΙΚΕΣ ΚΩΜΩΔΙΕΣ ΠΟΥ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΔΕΙΣ

Λατρεύω τον γαλλικό κινηματογράφο! και ειδικά τις κωμωδίες. Οι γαλλικές κωμωδίες έχουν ένα ιδιαίτερο χιούμορ, το οποίο συνήθως επικεντρώνεται στις κοινωνικές ή φυλετικές διαφορές. Πολλές φορές είναι ασεβείς, συνταρακτικές και «πολιτικά μη ορθές»… Αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά, κατά τη γνώμη μου, αντικατοπτρίζουν τον πολιτισμό και το χαρακτήρα του γαλλικού λαού, εξ ου και η διαφορά με τις αμερικανικές κωμωδίες …

Αυτές είναι 10 από τις πιο αγαπημένες μου γαλλικές κωμωδίες, που θα σε κάνουν να γελάς, να χαμογελάς, να σκέφτεσαι και μερικές φορές να συγκινείσαι …

1. INTOUCHABLES (ΆΘΙΚΤΟΙ), 2011

Η πλοκή: Ο Philippe είναι ένας τετραπληγικός αριστοκράτης που ζει στο Παρίσι, και παίρνει συνεντεύξεις υποψηφίων για να τον φροντίσουν. Όταν προσλαμβάνει τον Driss, αφρικανικής καταγωγής, η βαρετή του ζωή θα αλλάξει για πάντα…

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Πρόκειται για μια αληθινή ιστορία, βασισμένη στο βιβλίο Δεύτερη άνεμος που γράφτηκε από τον Philippe Pozzo di Borgo (το πραγματικό του όνομα). Είναι μια θαυμάσια ταινία, συγκινητική και αστεία ταυτόχρονα. Είναι μια ιστορία αγάπης, φιλίας και ανοχής … Οι ερμηνείες του Sy και του Cluzet είναι πραγματικά αξέχαστες…

2. LE FABULEUX DESTIN D’ AMELIE POULAIN (AMELIE), 2001

Η πλοκή: Η Amelie, μια ονειροπόλα σερβιτόρα που ζει στο Παρίσι, αποφασίζει να βοηθήσει ανώνυμα ανθρώπους να είναι ευτυχισμένοι. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, ανακαλύπτει και η ίδια την ευτυχία και την αγάπη.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η Amelie είναι μια πρωτότυπη, ρομαντική και συγκινητική ταινία που δείχνει ότι υπάρχει αγάπη και μαγεία παντού, ακόμη και στα πιο απλά πράγματα… Εκτός από την πανέμορφη φωτογραφία και την εξαιρετική ερμηνεία της Audrey Tautou, η υπέροχη μουσική του Yann Tiersen συμβάλλει να κάνει αυτή την ταινία ένα πραγματικό κόσμημα …

3. BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH’TIS (ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΡΕΛΟΙ ΑΥΤΟΙ ΟΙ ΒΟΡΕΙΟΙ), 2008

Η πλοκή: Ο Philippe, ένας ταχυδρομικός υπάλληλος που ζει στο γαλλικό νότο, παίρνει μια δυσμενής μετάθεση στη βόρεια Γαλλία, στο Nord-Pas-de-Calais, το οποίο ο Philippe πιστεύει πως είναι ένα κρύο, τρομακτικό μέρος, με ανθρώπους που πίνουν όλη την ημέρα και μιλούν μια ακατανόητη διάλεκτο που ονομάζεται “Ch’ti”… Σύντομα όμως συνειδητοποιεί ότι τα πράγματα δεν είναι και τόσο άσχημα…

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Bievenue chez les Ch’tis είναι η ταινία με τις μεγαλύτερες είσπραξεις όλων των εποχών στη Γαλλία. Είναι μια κωμωδία για την αγάπη και τη φιλία, δίνοντας το μήνυμα να αποφεύγουμε τα στερεότυπα και τις προκαταλήψεις… Μπορεί να χάνονται μερικά αστεία στην μετάφραση, οπότε αν είναι δυνατόν, να τη δεις στα γαλλικά…

4. QU’ EST-CE QU’ON A FAIT AU BON DIEU? (ΘΕΕ ΜΟΥ, ΤΙ ΣΟΥ ΚΑΝΑΜΕ;), 2014

Η πλοκή: Ο Claude και η Marie, ένα συντηρητικό, καθολικό ζευγάρι έχουν τέσσερις κόρες, από τις οποίες οι τρεις μεγαλύτερες είναι παντρεμένες με έναν Άραβα, έναν Εβραίο και έναν Κινέζο. Δυσκολεύονται να δεχτούν τα νέα μέλη της οικογένειας, και η μόνη ελπίδα είναι η νεώτερη τους κόρη…

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Αυτή η αμφιλεγόμενη ταινία ήταν μια μεγάλη εισπρακτική επιτυχία στη Γαλλία, αλλά δεν κυκλοφόρησε στις ΗΠΑ, ούτε στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, επειδή θεωρήθηκε «πολύ ρατσιστική και πολιτικά μη ορθή». Είναι αλήθεια πως μερικές στιγμές γίνεται πολύ κλισέ… Αλλά είναι ξεκαρδιστική, με εξαιρετικές ερμηνείες (Ο Christian Clavier είναι καταπληκτικός), σατιρίζει τους πάντες, χωρίς να αφήσει καμία φυλή ή θρησκεία απ’έξω… Πήγαινε οπωσδήποτε να τη δεις, με την προϋπόθεση ότι δεν αισθάνεσαι άβολα με θρησκευτικά ή φυλετικά αστεία …

5. LA FAMILLE BELIER (Η ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑ BELIER), 2014

Η πλοκή: Η Paula Bélier είναι η κόρη της Gigi και του Ροδόλφο και έχει έναν αδελφό που ονομάζεται Quentin. Οι γονείς και ο αδελφός της είναι κωφοί, και βασίζονται στην Paula ως την επαφή τους με τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Όταν ο δάσκαλος μουσικής της ανακαλύπτει πως η Paula έχει ένα χάρισμα για το τραγούδι -που προφανώς η οικογένειά της δεν μπορεί να κατανοήσει- η ίδια αντιμετωπίζει το δίλημμα αν πρέπει να μείνει με την οικογένειά της ή να ακολουθήσει τα όνειρά της…

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Αυτή η ευχάριστη, συγκινητική ταινία θα σε κάνει να γελάς, αλλά πιθανόν και να δακρύζεις… Έχει εξαιρετικές ερμηνείες (όλοι οι ηθοποιοί έμαθαν νοηματική γλώσσα για την ταινία) και πολύ έξυπνους διαλόγους, και θέτει με πολύ λεπτότητα το θέμα του αποχωρισμού από την οικογένειά μας, που εμένα -ομολογώ- με άγγιξε σε προσωπικό επίπεδο… Η Louane Emera (Paula) έγινε γνωστή στη Γαλλία με τη συμμετοχή της στο reality The Voice, και με αυτήν την ταινία κέρδισε ένα Σεζάρ για την πιο Υποσχόμενη Ηθοποιός.

6. LE PRENOM (ΓΙΑ ΟΛΑ ΦΤΑΙΕΙ Τ’ ΟΝΟΜΑ ΣΟΥ!), 2012

Η πλοκή: O Vincent, ο οποίος θα γίνει σύντομα πατέρας, είναι καλεσμένος για δείπνο στο σπίτι της αδελφής του και του κουνιάδο του, και θα βρεθεί εκεί και με έναν παιδικό φίλο. Όταν o Vincent αποκαλύπτει το όνομα που επέλεξε για τον αγέννητο γιο του, η απάντησή του προκαλεί μια συζήτηση η οποία κάποια στιγμή γίνεται εκτός ελέγχου.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Αυτή η ταινία είναι στην πραγματικότητα διασκευή από ένα θεατρικό έργο. Έχει πολύ καλές ερμηνείες και πολύ ευφυείς διαλόγους. Υπάρχουν πολλές ομοιότητες με την εξαιρετική ταινία Carnage του Roman Polansky.

7. L’ARNACOEUR (ΕΠΑΓΓΕΛΜΑΤΙΑΣ ΚΑΡΔΙΟΚΑΤΑΚΤΗΤΗΣ), 2010

Η πλοκή: Ο Alex, μαζί με την αδελφή του, έχει μια επιχείρηση που ειδικεύεται στο να χωρίζει ζευγάρια, και τον προσλαμβάνει ο πατέρας της Juliette για να την αποτρέψει από το να παντρευτεί έναν Άγγλο εκατομμυριούχο. Αλλά ο Alex έχει μόνο μία εβδομάδα για να αποπλανήσει τη Juliette …

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… είναι μία αστεία, έξυπνη και ρομαντική ταινία. Ο Roman Duris και η Vanessa Paradis έχουν πολύ καλή χημεία, και η τοποθεσία στο Montecarlo την κάνει ακόμα πιο ευχάριστη …

Οι παρακάτω 3 ταινίες, αν και παλαιότερες, είναι κλασικές, διαχρονικές κωμωδίες και πραγματικά αξίζει να τις δεις:

8. LES VISITEURS (ΟΙ ΕΠΙΣΚΕΠΤΕΣ), 1993

Η πλοκή: Ένας μεσαιωνικός ιππότης και ο υπηρέτης του αποφασίσουν να ταξιδέψουν στο παρελθόν για να διορθώσουν ένα μοιραίο συμβάν, αλλά η ηλικιωμένη μάγισσα τους μεταφέρει κατά λάθος στη σύγχρονη εποχή. Ενώ προσπαθούν να βρουν έναν τρόπο να επιστρέψουν στο Μεσαίωνα, θα πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσουν τις πολιτιστικές και τεχνολογικές διαφορές μεταξύ μεσαιωνικής και σύγχρονης εποχής …

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η πλοκή είναι πολύ πρωτότυπη, φαντάσου τι μπορεί να συμβεί όταν άνθρωποι του μεσαίωνα βλέπουν “άμαξες χωρίς αλόγους» (αυτοκίνητα) και πολλές άλλες σύγχρονες εφευρέσεις … Les visiteurs είχε τεράστια εισπρακτική επιτυχία στη Γαλλία. Ο Reno και ο Clavier πήραν τους ρόλους ξανά στην συνέχεια Les couloirs du temps: Les visiteurs II και Les visiteurs 3: La révolution. Ένα Αμερικάνικο remake, Οι Περαστικοί, έγινε το 2001.

9. LA GRANDE VADROUILLE (ΑΣΥΛΛΗΠΤΗ ΑΠΟΔΡΑΣΗ), 1966

Η πλοκή: Κατά τη διάρκεια του Β ‘Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, δύο Γάλλοι μαζί με μερικούς Άγγλους στρατιώτες ξεκινάνε από το Παρίσι για να διασχίσουν τη διαχωριστική γραμμή μεταξύ της κατεχόμενης Βόρειας Γαλλίας και του Νότου, προκειμένου να αποδράσουν στην Αγγλία. Για να τα καταφέρουν, θα πρέπει να αποφεύγουν τα γερμανικά στρατεύματα – και τις συνέπειες των δικών τους γκαφών.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… La Grande Vadrouille ήταν η πιο επιτυχημένη ταινία στη Γαλλία για περισσότερα από 30 χρόνια, και μόνο πρόσφατα την ξεπέρασαν η Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis και η Intouchables. Οι διάλογοι είναι ξεκαρδιστικοί, τολμά να τους κοροϊδεύει όλους: τους Άγγλους, τους Γάλλους, και κυρίως τους Γερμανούς … Ο Louis de Funes, χωρίς αμφιβολία, είναι ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους κωμικούς όλων των εποχών …

10. LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT (ΟΙ ΔΙΑΚΟΠΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΥ. HULOT), 1953

Η πλοκή: Ο κύριος Hulot πηγαίνει διακοπές σε ένα παραθαλάσσιο θέρετρο στη Βρετάνη. Παρ’ ότι οι προθέσεις του είναι καλές, τα ατυχήματα και οι παρεξηγήσεις τον ακολουθούν όπου κι αν πάει, και επηρεάζουν την ηρεμία και την ησυχία των υπολοίπων επισκεπτών του ξενοδοχείου …

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Ο Κος. Hulot του Ζακ Tatin έχει γίνει ένα all-time classic. Θυμίζει πολύ τον Charles Chaplin, αλλά και τον Mr. Bean (ο Rowan Atkinson έχει παραδεχθεί ότι ο κ Hulot ήταν έμπνευση για να δημιουργήσει τον Mr. Bean)… Αυτή η ταινία, με πολύ λίγους διαλόγους, κατορθώνει να σατιρίσει την μεσαία τάξη της Γαλλίας και “το κωμικό χαρακτήρα των ανθρώπων όταν αλληλεπιδρούν ως ομάδα».

10 FRENCH COMEDY FILMS YOU MUST SEE

I love French cinema, especially comedy films. French comedies have a particular humor, usually making emphasis on social or racial differences. Many times they are irreverent, unsettling and “politically incorrect”… These characteristics in my opinion reflect Frenchs’ culture and character, hence the difference with american comedies… These are 10 of my favourite French comedies, that will make you laugh, smile, think and occasionally cry…

1. INTOUCHABLES (THE INTOUCHABLES), 2011

The plot: Philippe is a quadriplegic millionaire who lives In Paris, and is interviewing candidates for the position of his carer. When he hires Driss, an African man, his boring life changes forever…

Go see it, because…The movie is actually a true story, based on the book A second wind written by Philippe Pozzo di Borgo (his real name). It’s a wonderful film, touching and funny at the same time. It’s about love, friendship and tolerance… Sy and Cluzet’s performances are just memorable…

2. LE FABULEUX DESTIN D’ AMELIE POULAIN (AMELIE), 2001

The plot: Amelie, a daydreamer waitress living in Paris, decides to anonymously help people being happy. By doing so, she discovers love and happiness herself.

Go see it, because… Amelie is original, romantic, heart-warming, showing that there is love and magic everywhere, even in simple things of life… Besides the excellent photography and the superb acting of Audrey Tautou, the magnificent music by Yann Tiersen adds up to make this movie a true gem…

3. BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH’TIS (WELCOME TO THE STICKS), 2008

The plot: Philippe, a post office administrator living in the French south, is banished to the Far North of France, that he believes is a dreadful and cold place, with heavy-drinking people who speak an incomprehensible dialect called Ch’ti…Soon though he realises that things are actually not that bad…

Go see it, because…Bievenue chez les Ch’tis is France’s highest grossing film of all times. It’s a comedy about love and friendship, giving the message to avoid making assumptions or having preconceptions about people… It may lose some of the jokes when translated, so if possible, see it in French…

4. QU’ EST-CE QU’ON A FAIT AU BON DIEU? (SERIAL (BAD) WEDDINGS), 2014

The plot: A catholic, bourgeois French couple has four daughters, the three older being married to a Muslim Arab, a Shepardi Jew, and a Chinese. Having a hard time to accept the new members of the family, their hopes are set on their younger daughter…

Go see it, because… This controversial film was a great box-office success in France, but it was not released in the USA and UK because it was considered “too racist and politically incorrect”. True, it is at times too cliché and eventually unsettling… But it’s hilarious, with great acting (Christian Clavier is superb), making fun of everybody, no race or religion is left outside… Go see it, provided that you don’t feel uneasy with religious or racial jokes…

5. LA FAMILLE BELIER (THE BELIER FAMILY), 2014

The plot: Paula Bélier is the daughter of Gigi and Rodolphe and has a brother called Quentin. Her parents and brother are deaf, and rely on Paula as their contact to the rest of the world. When her music teacher discovers that she has a gift for singing -which obviously her family cannot understand- she faces the dilemma whether to stay with her family or follow her dreams…

Go see it, because… This feel-good, touching film will make you laugh, but also shed some tears… Besides the great acting (all the actors learnt sign language for the movie) and clever dialogues, the movie deals with the issue of leaving our family, which certainly touched me on a personal level…Louane Emera (Paula) became known in France after her participation in a reality show, The Voice, and with this film she won a Cesar for Most Promising Actress.

6. LE PRENOM (WHAT’S IN A NAME?), 2012

The plot: Vincent is about to become a father, and he is invited for dinner by his sister and his brother-in-law; there he also finds a childhood friend. When he reveals the name they chose for their unborn son, his response provokes a discussion that eventually gets out of hands.

Go see it, because…This film is actually an adaptation from a theatrical play; it has great performances and very intelligent dialogues. There are many similarities with Carnage by Roman Polansky, a film I also enjoyed very much.

7. L’ARNACOEUR (HEARTBRAKER), 2010

The plot: Alex and his sister run a business designed to break up relationships. He is hired by Juliette’s father to prevent her from marrying an English millionaire. But Alex has only one week to seduce Juliette…

Go see it, because… This is a funny, smart, witty and romantic film. Roman Duris and Vanessa Paradis have great chemistry, and the Montecarlo settings make it even more enjoyable…

The following 3 movies are much older, but classical, must-see, timeless French comedies:

8. LES VISITEURS (THE VISITORS), 1993

The plot: A medieval knight and his servant, who were supposed to travel to the past to correct a fatal error, are accidentally transported to modern times by an old sorcerer. While trying to find a way to return home, they must cope with the cultural and technological differences between medieval and modern times…

Go see it, because…The plot is extremely original, just imagine what can happen when men living in the medieval times see “horseless chariots” (cars) and many other modern inventions… Les Visiteurs was a huge box office success in France. Reno and Clavier reprised their roles in the sequels Les couloirs du temps: Les visiteurs II and Les Visiteurs 3: La révolution. An American remake, Just Visiting, was made in 2001.

9. LA GRANDE VADROUILLE (DON’T LOOK NOW… WE’RE BEING SHOT AT!, a.k.a. THE GREAT PROMENADE), 1966

The plot: During World War II, two French civilians and a downed British Bomber crew leave from Paris to cross the demarcation line between Nazi-occupied Northern France and the South, in order to escape to England. For that, they must avoid German troops – and the consequences of their own gaffes.

Go see it, because: La Grande Vadrouille was the most successful film in France for more than 30 years, only surpassed lately by Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis and Intouchables. The dialogues are hilarious, it dares to make fun of anyone: British, French, and mostly Germans… Louis the Funes, with no doubt, is one of the greatest comedians of all times…

10. LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT (MR. HULOT’S HOLIDAY), 1953

The plot: Monsieur Hulot goes on holidays to a seaside resort in Brittany. Although his intentions are good, accidents and misunderstandings follow him wherever he goes, affecting the peace and quietness of the hotel guests…

Go see it, because… Jacques Tatin’s Hulot has become an all-time classic. He reminds us of Charles Chaplin, but also of Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson has admitted that Mr. Hulot influenced Mr. Bean’s character)… This film, with very few dialogues, manages to satirize France’s middle class and “the comical nature of humanity when interacting as a group”.

Η πρόσφατη υποψηφιότητα Όσκαρ για τη ταινία Relatos Salvajes (Ιστορίες για αγρίους) μου θύμισε πολλές άλλες, αξιόλογες Αργεντίνικες ταινίες.

Το σινεμά της Αργεντινής έχει επηρεαστεί βαθύτατα από την ιστορία της χώρας. Ξεκινώντας ήδη από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα, είχε την Χρυσή του εποχή στις δεκαετίες του 1930-’50. Κατά την διάρκεια της στρατιωτικής χούντας στη δεκαετία του 1970 υπέστη λογοκρισία και καταστολή. Οι συνέπειες της εν λόγω περιόδου επηρέασαν και την επόμενη δεκαετία, με λίγες εξαιρέσεις (βλέπε παρακάτω). Δεν ήταν μέχρι τη δεκαετία του 1990 που νέοι σκηνοθέτες ξεκίνησαν αυτό που είναι τώρα γνωστό ως Νέο Αργεντίνικο Σινεμά. Αυτό το νέο σινεμά είναι επικεντρωμένο κυρίως στην κριτική της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας της Αργεντινής, εισχωρεί βαθιά στις ζωές των χαρακτήρων με μεγάλες δόσεις ρεαλισμού, απεικονίζοντας ταυτόχρονα την πολυπλοκότητα της ανθρώπινης φύσης.

Αυτές οι 10 ταινίες θα σε βοηθήσουν να καταλάβεις καλύτερα τον πολιτισμό της Αργεντινής και τη νοοτροπία του λαού της:

1. EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS (ΤΟ ΜΥΣΤΙΚΟ ΣΤΑ ΜΑΤΙΑ ΤΗΣ), 2009

Η πλοκή: Ο Benjamin Esposito είναι ένας πρόσφατα συνταξιοδοτημένος νομικός σύμβουλος. Επηρεασμένος ακόμα από μια βάναυση δολοφονία που συνέβη είκοσι πέντε χρόνια νωρίτερα, το 1974, αποφασίζει να γράψει ένα μυθιστόρημα γι ‘αυτό. Όταν ξαναζήσει το παρελθόν, επανασυνδέεται με μια γυναίκα που έχει αγαπήσει σιωπηλά όλα αυτά τα χρόνια.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η ταινία -δικαίως- βραβεύτηκε με Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Ξενόγλωσσης Ταινίας. Έχει εξαιρετική κινηματογραφία (η σκηνή του αγώνα ποδοσφαίρου είναι καταπληκτική), φοβερή υποκριτική και ανάπτυξη των χαρακτήρων. Η ιστορία είναι συναισθηματική, με πολύ καλογραμμένους διαλόγους, και τις σωστές δώσεις από έγκλημα, έρωτα, δράμα, θρίλερ…

2. NUEVE REINAS (9 ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΕΣ), 2000

Η πλοκή: Ο Juan και ο Μάρκος είναι δύο μικροαπατεώνες που εμπλέκονται συμπτωματικά σε μια υπόθεση που μπορεί να τους κάνει εκατομμυριούχους: ένας γνωστός απατεώνας τους στρατολογεί για να πουλήσουν μια σειρά από εξαιρετικά σπάνια και πολύτιμα γραμματόσημα, οι Εννέα Βασίλισσες. Οι δύσκολες διαπραγματεύσεις που ανακύπτουν φανερώνουν μια σειρά ύποπτων χαρακτήρων. Όπως οι εξαπατήσεις κορυφώνονται, γίνεται όλο και πιο δύσκολο να καταλάβεις ποιος εξαπατάει ποιον.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η ταινία είναι διασκεδαστική, με πολύ γρήγορο ρυθμό, έξυπνη πλοκή, εξαιρετική υποκριτική, απόλυτα συναρπαστική και απρόβλεπτη. Ένα Hollywood remake τις ταινίας, Criminal, έχει γίνει το 2004.

3. RELATOS SALVAJES (ΙΣΤΟΡΙΕΣ ΓΙΑ ΑΓΡΙΟΥΣ), 2014

Η πλοκή: Η ταινία αποτελείται από έξι επεισόδια τα οποία εναλλάσσουν ίντριγκα, κωμωδία και βία. Όλοι οι χαρακτήρες ωθούνται στα όριά τους, προς «την αναμφισβήτητη ευχαρίστηση της απώλειας ελέγχου», και ξεπερνούν τη λεπτή γραμμή που διαχωρίζει τον πολιτισμό από την βαρβαρότητα.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η ταινία ήταν υποψήφια για Όσκαρ στην κατηγορία Καλύτερης Ξενόγλωσσης Ταινίας (έχασε από την Ida), και έγινε στην Αργεντινή η ταινία με της μεγαλύτερες εισπράξεις όλων των εποχών. Μπορεί να μην είναι για όλους, όμως. Μερικές στιγμές γίνεται μακάβρια και κατάμαυρη. Αλλά έχει εξαιρετική σκηνοθεσία, και -σ’αρέσει ή όχι- μπορεί κάποτε και εσύ να βρεθείς σε θέση να επιθυμείς να κάνεις ό, τι κάνουν οι πρωταγονιστές της ταινίας…

4. EL HIJO DE LA NOVIA (Ο ΓΙΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΝΥΦΗΣ), 2001

Η πλοκή: Ο Rafael είναι ένας εστιάτορας που περνάει κρίση μέσης ηλικίας. Είναι διαζευγμένος, βλέπει πολύ λίγο τη κόρη του, δεν έχει φίλους και αποφεύγει τη δέσμευση με τη φίλη του. Και για ένα μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα δεν έχει επισκεφτεί τη μητέρα του, που βρίσκεται σε ένα γεροκομείο επειδή έχει Αλτσχάιμερ. Μια σειρά από απρόσμενα γεγονότα θα τον αναγκάσουν να ξανασκεφτεί τη ζωή του. Μεταξύ αυτών, η πρόθεση του πατέρα του Rafael να ολοκληρώσει το όνειρο ζωής της μητέρας του: να παντρευτούν στην εκκλησία.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… και αυτή η ταινία ήταν υποψήφια για Όσκαρ στην κατηγορία Ξενόγλωσσης Ταινίας. Έχει την τέλεια ισορροπία μεταξύ κωμωδίας και δράματος, χαμόγελων και δακρύων … Η οικογένεια, οι σχέσεις, τα οικονομικά προβλήματα… Θα σου θυμίσει μερικές καλές, παλιές ιταλικές ταινίες.

5. DIARIOS DE MOTOCICLETA (ΗΜΕΡΟΛΟΓΙΟ ΜΟΤΟΣΙΚΛΕΤΑΣ), 2004

Η πλοκή: Το 1952, ο Ερνέστο “Τσε” Γκεβάρα, ενώ ήταν φοιτητής ιατρικής, γυρίζει την Νότια Αμερική με μια μοτοσικλέτα μαζί με τον φίλο του, τον Alberto Granado. Και οι δύο νεαροί αφήνουν πίσω τους την άνεση του Μπουένος Άιρες και ξεκινήσουν ένα ταξίδι ανακάλυψης της πολύπλοκης ανθρώπινης και κοινωνικής κατάστασης της Νότιας Αμερικής, οπλισμένοι με μια ρομαντική και περιπετειώδες διάθεση.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Η ταινία είναι στην πραγματικότητα μια συμπαραγωγή μεταξύ Αργεντινής, ΗΠΑ, Χιλής, Περού, Βραζιλίας, Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, Γερμανίας και Γαλλίας. Έχει προταθεί για 42 βραβεία, και κέρδισε 37 από αυτά, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Όσκαρ. Μιλαέι για τα ταξίδια, την περιπέτεια, την ανακάλυψη, αλλά κυρίως την αυτογνωσία. 6. UN CUENTO CHINO (Η ΑΓΕΛΑΔΑ ΠΟΥ ΕΠΕΣΕ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΟΥΡΑΝΟ), 2011

Η πλοκή: Ο Ρομπέρτο είναι ένας άνδρας κατσούφης και αντικοινωνικός, ιδιοκτήτης ενός μικρού καταστήματος στο Μπουένος Άιρες, του οποίου του αρέσει να συλλέγει παράξενες ιστορίες που διαβάζει στις εφημερίδες. Τυχαία συναντά τον Jun, ένας Κινέζος που μόλις έφτασε στην Αργεντινή αναζητώντας τον μοναδικό ζωντανό συγγενή του. Ο Roberto τον φιλοξενεί, και αυτή η ασυνήθιστη συμβίωση τον βοηθά να βάλει τέλος στη μοναξιά του. Η μοίρα τελικά θα έχει να κάνει με την συνάντηση τους, καθώς και θα εξηγήσει το σουρεαλιστικό γεγονός που βλέπουμε στην αρχή της ταινίας: μια αγελάδα που πέφτει από τον ουρανό.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Είναι μια πολύ ευχάριστη, feel-good κωμωδία με μερικές δόσεις μαύρου χιούμορ, η οποία εξερευνά το πεπρωμένο, τις πολιτιστικές διαφορές, τη φιλία και την αγάπη.

7. MEDIANERAS (ΜΕΣΟΤΟΙΧΙΕΣ), 2011

Η πλοκή: Ο Martin, ένας αγοραφοβικός σχεδιαστής ιστοσελίδων και η Μαριάνα, μια υποαπασχολούμενη αρχιτεκτόνισσα, μένουν στον ίδιο δρόμο στο Μπουένος Άιρες. Και οι δύο αισθάνονται θλίψη και μοναξιά. Φαίνονται να είναι τέλειοι ο ένας για τον άλλον, αλλά ποιες είναι οι πιθανότητες να συναντηθούν; Η ταινία ξεκινά με την θέα του Μπουένος Άιρες από ψηλά και παρομοιάζει την αρχιτεκτονική της πόλης με τους κατοίκους τους: ανοργάνωτοι, αντιφατικοί, χαοτικοί και απομονωμένοι.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Είναι μια πολύ πρωτότυπη ταινία, επειδή αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός ζευγαριού προτού γνωριστούν, και περιγράφει πολύ καλά το συναίσθημα μοναξιάς και απομόνωσης των μεγαλουπόλεων. Είναι μια απλή αλλά ευχάριστη ταινία, με πολύ καλαίσθητη κινηματογραφική.

Οι τρεις παρακάτω, αν και παλαιότερες, είναι κλασικές Αργεντίνικες ταινίες και πραγματικά αξίζει να τις δεις:

8. ESPERANDO LA CARROZA (WAITING FOR THE HEARSE), 1985

Η πλοκή: η Mama Cora, κοντά στα ογδόντα της, έχει τρεις γιους και μια κόρη, και μένει με αυτόν στη χειρότερη οικονομική κατάσταση. Μια μέρα η οικογένεια συγκεντρώνεται για μια γιορτή, και το μεγάλο ερώτημα προκύπτει: Ποιος θα είναι ο επόμενος που θα αναλάβει τη φροντίδα της; Το ζήτημα γίνεται ακόμα πιο περίπλοκο όταν ανακαλύπτουν ότι η ηλικιωμένη γυναίκα αυτοκτόνησε …

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Esperando la Carroza έχει γίνει μια cult ταινία στην Αργεντινή, και ψηφίστηκε ως τη καλύτερη Αργεντίνικη κωμωδία όλων των εποχών. Έχει πολλές ατάκες που ακόμα και σήμερα χρησιμοποιούνται ευρέως σε καθημερινές συζητήσεις. Απεικονίζει την μεσαία τάξη της Αργεντινής, σατιρίζει την κοινωνία, τις παραδόσεις, και το ζήτημα της φροντίδας των ηλικιωμένων. Ο χαρακτήρας της Mama Cora (που ερμηνεύει ο Antonio Gasalla) είναι πραγματικά ξεκαρδιστικός.

9. HOMBRE MIRANDO AL SUDESTE (MAN FACING SOUTHEAST), 1986

Η πλοκή: Ο Julio Denis είναι ένας ψυχίατρος που εργάζεται σε ένα νευροψυχιατρικό νοσοκομείο. Μια μέρα ένας νεαρός άνδρας, ο Rantes, εμφανίζεται μυστηριωδώς στο νοσοκομείο, και ισχυρίζεται ότι έχει έρθει από άλλον πλανήτη για να μελετήσει τους ανθρώπους και τη συμπεριφορά τους. Ο γιατρός αρχικά τον αντιμετωπίζει ως έναν παρανοϊκό, αλλά όσο εμπλέκεται με τον ασθενή, αρχίζει να αμφιβάλλει αν ο Rantes είναι πραγματικά τρελός ή όχι. Ο νεαρός, διακριτικά, αναγκάζει τον Δρ Denis να ξανασκεφτεί τη ζωή και την καριέρα του.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Hombre mirando al Sudeste είναι μια έξυπνη, προκλητική και εμπνευσμένη ταινία που εξετάζει την ανθρώπινη φύση και τις αντιφάσεις της. Το Χόλιγουντ ~~έκλεψε~~ δανείστηκε την ιδέα το 2001 στην ταινία K-Pax.

10. LA HISTORIA OFICIAL (THE OFFICIAL STORY), 1985

Η πλοκή: Μπουένος Άιρες, 1983. Η Alicia, μια καθηγήτρια ιστορίας, είναι παντρεμένη με τον Roberto, ένας κρατικός δικηγόρος, και έχουν μια υιοθετημένη κόρη. Λόγω της λογοκρισίας, η Αλίσια δεν γνωρίζει για τις δολοφονίες που έχει πράξει η χούντα. Μετά από μια συνομιλία με τους μαθητές της, και με μια φίλη που ήταν στην εξορία αφού βασανίστηκε από την κυβέρνηση, η Alicia αρχίσει να ερευνήσει το θέμα. Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας αποκαλύπτουν την ταυτότητα των γονιών του υιοθετημένου κοριτσιού και ο ρόλος του σύζυγού της στα εγκλήματα της δικτατορίας.

Πήγαινε να τη δεις, γιατί… Παρότι δεν είναι αληθινή ιστορία, η ταινία βασίζεται σε πραγματικά γεγονότα που έλαβαν χώρα κατά τη διάρκεια της στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας στην δεκαετία του ’70. Είναι μέρος του οδυνηρού παρελθόν της Αργεντινής και πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να τη δουν όσοι ενδιαφέρονται να μάθουν περισσότερα για την ιστορία της χώρας. Είναι ένα ισχυρό φιλμ, με εξαιρετικές ερμηνείες και σκηνοθεσία. Μεταξύ πολλών άλλων βραβείων, κέρδισε το Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Ξενόγλωσσης Ταινίας.

10 ARGENTINEAN FILMS YOU MUST SEE

The recent Oscar nomination to the film Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) reminded me of many other, worth watching Argentinean movies.

Argentina’s cinema has been profoundly influenced by the country’s history. Starting already at the end of the 19th century, it had its Golden age in the 1930s-50s. Under the military junta in the 1970s it suffered from censorship and repression. The effects of that period carried over into the next decade, with few exceptions (see below). It was not until the 1990s that young directors started what is now known as the New Argentine Cinema. This new cinema is mostly focused on criticising modern Argentine society and digging deep into the lives of individual characters with large doses of realism, depicting the complexity of human nature.

These 10 movies will help you understand better Argentina’s culture and mentality:

1. EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS (THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES), 2009

The plot: Benjamin Esposito is a recently retired legal counselor. Obsessed by a brutal murder occurred twenty five years earlier, in 1974, he decides to write a novel about it. By reliving the past, he also comes in contact with a woman who has loved in silence all those years.

Go see it because… The film -deservedly- won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It has excellent cinematography (the soccer match scene is amazing), great acting and character development. The story is emotional, deeply involving, with very well-written dialogues. It has crime, romance, drama and thriller…

2. NUEVE REINAS (NINE QUEENS), 2000

The plot: Juan and Marcos are two con artists who get coincidentally involved in an affair that can make them millionaires: an old-time con man enlists them to sell a set of extremely valuable rare stamps, The Nine Queens. The tricky negotiations that ensue bring into the picture a cast of suspicious characters. As deceptions mount, it becomes more and more difficult to figure out who is conning whom.

Go see it because…The film is entertaining, fast-paced, with intelligent plot, great acting, totally engaging and unpredictable. A Hollywood remake, Criminal, has been done in 2004.

3. RELATOS SALVAJES (WILD TALES), 2014

The plot: The film consists of six episodes which alternate intrigue, comedy and violence. All the characters are pushed to their limits, towards “the undeniable pleasure of losing control“, crossing the fine line that separates civilization from barbarism.

Go see it because…The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film (it lost against Ida), and became Argentina’s biggest box-office hit of all times. It may not be for everybody; it’s at times unsettling and extremely dark. But it has excellent direction, and -like it or not- you may find yourself wishing to do what the characters do in certain situations…

4. EL HIJO DE LA NOVIA (SON OF THE BRIDE), 2001

The plot: Rafael is a restaurateur going through midlife crisis; he is divorced, sees very little his daughter, has no friends and avoids committing to his girlfriend. And for a long time he has not visited his mother, who is at a nursing home with Alzheimer’s disease. A series of unexpected events will force him to rethink his life. Among them, the intention his father has to accomplish his mother’s lifetime dream: to get married in the Church.

Go see it because…it was Argentina’s official submission for 2001 Oscar Awards, Foreign Language film category. The movie has a perfect balance of comedy and drama, smiles and tears… Family, relationships, economical problems…It will remind you of some good old Italian films.

5. DIARIOS DE MOTOCICLETA (MOTORCYCLE DIARIES), 2004

The plot: In 1952, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, being a medical student, tours South America with a motorcycle together with his friend Alberto Granado. Both young men leave behind the familiar “comfort” of Buenos Aires and embark on a discovery journey of the complex human and social situation of South America, imbued with a romantic adventurous spirit.

Go see it because…The movie is actually a coproduction between Argentina, USA, Chile, Peru, Brazil, UK, Germany and France; it has been nominated for 42 awards and won 37 of them, including an Oscar. It is a film about travel, adventure, discovery, but mainly self-discovery. I have already written about this wonderful movie here and here.

6. UN CUENTO CHINO (CHINESE TAKE-AWAY), 2011

The plot: Roberto is a grumpy, anti-social man who owns a hardware shop in Buenos Aires and loves collecting bizarre stories he reads in the newspapers. By chance he meets Jun, a Chinese man who just arrived in Argentina looking for his only living relative. Roberto takes him in, and their unusual cohabitation helps Roberto bring an end to his loneliness. Destiny will have to do with their encounter, as well as explain the film’s surreal opening sequence: a cow falling from the sky.

Go see it because…This is a heart-warming, feel-good comedy with some doses of black humor, exploring destiny, cultural differences, friendship and love.

7. MEDIANERAS (SIDEWALLS), 2011

The plot: Martin, an agoraphobic website designer and Mariana, an underemployed architect, live on the same street in Buenos Aires. They both feel depressed and lonely. They seem to be perfect for each other, but what are the odds of meeting each other? The film begins by showing Buenos Aires’ skyline, and parallels the city’s architecture with how their inhabitants’ are – disorganised, contradictory, chaotic and disconnected.

Go see it because…The films describes perfectly the feeling of loneliness and isolation of big metropolises. It is touching and cinematically beautiful.

The three following, although older, are classical Argentinean films and are definitively worth watching:

8. ESPERANDO LA CARROZA (WAITING FOR THE HEARSE), 1985

The plot: Mama Cora, close to her eighties, has three sons and a daughter, and lives with one of them, the one in the worst economical situation. One day the family gathers to celebrate an anniversary, and the great dilemma arises: Who will be the heir of Mama Cora? Who will be the next to take care of her? The tricky issue gets even more complicated when they find out that the old woman killed herself…

Go see it because…Esperando la Carroza has become a cult movie in Argentina, and was voted the best Argentinean comedy of all times. It has many tag lines which still nowadays are part of everyday talk. It portrays Argentina’s middle class, satirises society and traditions, and deals with the subject of taking care of the elder. The character of Mama Cora (played by Antonio Gasalla) is just hilarious.

9. HOMBRE MIRANDO AL SUDESTE (MAN FACING SOUTHEAST), 1986

The plot: Dr. Julio Denis is a psychiatrist who works at a neuropsychiatric hospital. One day a young man, Rantes, mysteriously appears at the hospital, claiming to have come from another planet to study humans and their behaviour. The doctor treats him as a paranoid, but as he gets involved with the patient, he starts doubting whether he is really crazy or not, subtly forcing Dr. Denis to rethink his life and career.

Go see it because…Man Facing Southeast is an intelligent, provocative and inspirational film that examines human condition and its contradictions. Hollywood has ~~plagiarised~~ borrowed the idea in the 2001 movie K-Pax.

10. LA HISTORIA OFICIAL (THE OFFICIAL STORY), 1985

The plot: Buenos Aires, 1983. Alicia, a history teacher, is happily married to Roberto, a government agent, and they have an adopted daughter. Due to censorship, Alicia is not aware of how much killing had gone on. After having a conversation with her students and with a friend who had been in exile after being tortured by the government, Alicia starts doing some research on her own. The results reveal the identity of the little girl’s parents and her husband’s role in the government’s repression.

Go see it because…Although fictional, this film is based on actual events that took place during Argentina’s military dictatorship of the 1970s. It is a part of a Argentina’s painful past and should be seen by anyone interested in learning more on the country’s history. It is a powerful film, superbly acted and directed; among many other awards, it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

10 MOVIES THAT INSPIRE LIFE-CHANGING TRAVEL

It inspires travel because…. a road trip in South America, the intimate contact with its people, but also a self discovery journey…This movie certainly inspired me, and this trip is at the top of my lifetime “Bucket list”…

2. SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET

The plot: Based on the true story of Austrian Heinrich Harrer, who travels to the Himalayas to climb Mt. Nanga. After going through several incidents, he becomes one of the two foreigners in the Tibetan Holy City of Lhasa. There he befriends with the Dalai Lama, changing his life forever…

It inspires travel because….the film introduces us to Tibetans lifestyle, and shows us how a trip can transform someone, from being selfish and arrogant to wise and spiritual…Besides, the beautiful Tibetan scenery…

Quote: Dalai Lama: “We have a saying in Tibet: if a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good”.

3. INTO THE WILD

The plot: After graduating from university, top student Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions and hitchhikes to Alaska to live into the wild. Based on a true story.

It inspires travel because…the idea of abandoning everything to pursue a road trip throughout the United States has inspired many people. The movie captures very nicely the american natural beauty.

4. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

The plot: When his job gets threatened, Walter embarks on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

The plot: A young American backpacker travels to Thailand, and searches for a hidden beach, supposed to be paradise on earth.

It inspires travel because….Who doesn’t want to find the perfect, secluded beach? The Maya Bay, where the movie was filmed has inspired a lot of travellers, becoming one of the major tourist attractions in Thailand.

6. UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN

The plot: Based (loosely) on the biographical novel of Frances Mayes. When her perfect life gets unexpectedly messed up, Frances goes on a bus tour to Italy, and there she impulsively buys a villa in Tuscany. While restoring the villa, she eventually finds herself, and love…

7. OUT OF AFRICA

The plot: Karen Blixen, a Danish woman, moves to Africa and starts a coffee plantation. While her sentimental life gets complicated, she gains a much better understanding and respect for the African culture. Based on a true story.

8. L’AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE

The plot: Xavier, a French student, moves to Barcelona. There, he shares an apartment with other foreign students. Together they will live a series of adventures that will change his life.

It inspires travel because…the student life, the cultural exchanges, with Barcelona as a background.

9. LOST IN TRANSLATION

The plot: Two americans meet each other in Tokyo and experience the cultural and language differences between themselves and the Japanese.

It inspires travel because…traveling sometimes make us bond to people that influences us forever. The movie captures very well Japanese culture, and shows some beautiful shots in Kyoto…

10. EAT PRAY LOVE

The plot: A woman unhappy with her life takes off on a journey, and finds herself while eating in Italy, praying in India, and loving in Indonesia.

It inspires travel because….Although Liz’s character did not inspire me, neither I liked much the movie, there are breathtaking landscapes, delicious food and nice music (I love this song…). Besides, who wouldn’t want to go on a trip from Italy to India to Bali?
