ESTEROS DEL IBERA, ARGENTINA: AN UNSPOILED NATURAL PARADISE

When traveling to Argentina, it’s really worth a detour to Corrientes province, to visit its well-hidden natural wonder: Esteros del Iberá.

This impressive natural reserve of over 2.000.000 square kilometers is a group of lagoons, marshlands and swamps, which are home for a huge variety of plants, animals, insects, butterflies…. The area is of a pure, unrivalled beauty.

Esteros del Ibera air view. A green paradise…

One of the reasons why this area is so well protected is its difficult access, only possible by 4×4 vehicles. The gateway to explore Ibera wetlands is a little rural village named Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. When coming from the town of Mercedes, you will need to go through 120 -endless- kilometers of unpaved road in a very bad condition. It is not a good idea to attempt it with a regular car: there are many chances you will get stuck, literally in the middle of nowhere!

Ibera Road Sunset 2 resizedRoad to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. Drive carefully, be patient and enjoy the ride!

Even if the road is difficult, we enjoyed it a lot, and we were traveling with our kids! (long trips with kids, many of you know what I’m talking about…). Besides the feeling of adventure, we were getting already a taste of what we would see at the wetlands, as wild animals started showing up: capybaras, ñandúes, armadillos…And when it became dark, we were delighted: thousands of fireflies everywhere! It was just magic!

When arriving to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, a very narrow -somewhat scary- bridge welcomes you; it was built by the Argentinian army in 1970.

Ibera entrada Colonia CArlos PellegriniWelcome to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini!

The town is an invitation to relax, an absolute stress detox from the frenetic rhythms of civilisation… Don’t expect crazy nightlife or happenings: it’s just you and nature… Roads are unpaved, trees and flowers everywhere; the only noise you hear is birds singing.

Ibera Posada el Yacare patioNature at its best: few vehicles, flowers and birds singing…

After a restful sleep at our posada, we headed early morning for a boat ride in the wetlands. Our guide, Jorge, was telling us in the meantime some interesting information about the history of Esteros del Ibera: the area was declared National Reserve in 1983; in an effort to limit poaching (very common back then), many hunters became Reserve guards (smart move!).

Our first stopover is the Centro de Interpretación (Interpretation Center), where a guard registers our boat. For ecological reasons, only a limited number of boats are allowed…

Then we start admiring the lush vegetation: water hyacinths and poppies, aquatic nettles, bulrushes and cannas which give rise to the phenomenon of embalsados: authentic floating islands, so dense that they grow on land species, such as shrubs and even trees…

Ibera flora

Ibera flores 2Esteros del Ibera’s embalsado; the water hyacinth is the most common species

The wetlands are the habitat of a huge number of birds (see below). An interesting bird species is chajá (southern screamer): chajás are monogamous, once a couple they no longer separate. It is popularly believed that if one of them dies, the other one dies of sadness shortly after… The couple also shares the eggs’ incubation (!)

Ibera chajasA couple of chajás. Their behaviour, an example to be followed by humans…

After that, we get to see the king of the swamps: the yacaré! Both yacaré negro (the most commonly found) and yacaré overo (they are a variety of caymans) can reach over two meters long, but due to intense poaching before the foundation of the park and their slow growth you will rarely see so big ones. The latest years, though, they have been able to reproduce and they are easily spotted.

It’s very common to see them with a huge, open mouth. That doesn’t mean they are about to eat us! Like all reptiles, yacares don’t control their body’s temperature, they depend on external conditions. When the temperature begins to rise, opening their mouth is the mean to cool themselves! Yacarés in fact eat mainly fishes such as palometa, a species of piranha (yes, there are piranhas at the wetlands, don’t get tempted to swim there…).

Ibera yacare The impressive yacare negro “cooling down” at an embalsado…

Our guide Jorge turns off the engine of the boat, and with the rows gets really close to them:

Ibera yacare nearA yacare close-up. In spite of the scary look, they won’t attack unless they feel threatened…

Another easily spotted animal is carpincho (capybara), the largest rodent in the world. Carpinchos are very social, they are usually seen in groups of 10-20. Their gestation lasts only 4 months, and they can have up to 8 pups in a single litter, that explains why there are so many of them…

Ibera carpinchoCarpincho, the world’s largest rodent

Our 2-hour boat ride finishes…. After some rest to recover from the heat, we spend some time at the Centro de Visitantes (Visitor’s center). The center has an interesting exhibition hall with illustrative material on history, geography and biology of the Reserve.

Ibera centro de visitantesVisitor’s Center “Bright Water”, Reserve of Ibera

From there we head to Sendero Caraya (Caraya trail), a beautiful walk in the middle of the forest, where, if you are lucky enough, you will see caraya monkeys. These monkeys commonly sleep up to 70% of the day!, and they are quite shy, so they may not be seen if there are a lot of people around…

Ibera Caraya CollageCaraya trail, one of the numerous trails you can take to admire wildlife…

You may see as well ciervos de los pantanos (marsh deers)… Marsh deers are excellent swimmers, usually solitary animals. They are considered an endangered species.

Other activities

Bird Watching: If you like bird watching, this is your spot! There are more than 350 species of birds at Ibera Wetlands. Special tours are organised for that purpose; most of the lodges will be able to arrange one for you.

Ibera aves collageYou will be able to see plenty of birds, even if you don’t go birdwatching…

Sunset and night boat ride: if you have enough time, it is a good idea to take a boat ride to see the sunset at the lagoons. There you will realise why the place is called Ibera: in guarani (the language of the indians who used to live there) it means “bright water”…  Night navigation offers the possibility of spotting animals that during the day are hiding from the harsh sun: armadillos, foxes, vizcachas, owls…

Ibera sunset resizedIbera lagoon at sunset. “Bright water” as the indians named the area…

Horseback rides: with the guide of wildlife specialists, you can explore more remote areas and get to know their flora and fauna in detail…

USEFUL TIPS

How to get there: there are only 2 roads to get to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, both unpaved!: from Mercedes, Corrientes (120 km, of which 80 km unpaved; you will follow this one if you come from Buenos Aires); or from Posadas, Misiones (250 km, of which about 150 km unpaved)…

  • Access in only by 4×4. Unless you come on an organised tour, you can hire them at Mercedes.
  • If you drive your own vehicle, don’t forget to get some gas in Mercedes, there is no gas station afterwards!
  • Another important tip: there are chances that, in case of heavy rain, you get stuck at Carlos Pellegrini; keep that in mind in case you have a plane to catch…

When to go: The ideal period to visit Esteros del Ibera is from March to October. Summer gets really hot and humid!

Where to stay: Ibera has seen lately some touristic development; you can find there several lodges and posadas of all ranges, from luxury to more modest. Most of them have air condition and wifi. There is also a camping.

Ibera lodge CollageSome of the lodges at Carlos Pellegrini: Posada el Yacare, Posada de la Laguna, Irupe Lodge

Where to eat: there are a few restaurants where you can taste Argentina’s traditional dishes. Try the very nice, family-own Yacaru Pora.

BAJOFONDO

Leaving from Cuba and the sounds of Buena Vista Social Club, we fly south and land in Uruguay, or more precisely, Rio de la Plata, to join a Uruguayan – Argentinian band: Bajofondo. Bajofondo banner_bajofondo Bajofondo is an 8-member group led by Gustavo Santaolalla, two-times Oscar winner for the soundtracks of ‘Babel’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’. Their music is usually characterised as electrotango, that is, a blend of acoustic tango and electronic music. Bajofondo, together with Gotan Project are the two best known representatives of this genre, and they are regarded as the groups who brought tango back into mainstream. Santaolalla, though, prefers to call their music “Contemporary music of Rio de la Plata”, the river that separates (and unites) Argentina and Uruguay…

Bajo-Fondo-Tango-ClubThe band was founded in 2002 with the name Bajofondo Tango Club, and that is also the name of their first album. Bajofondo Tango Club had a great success and won a Latin Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album. According to the BBC, the band has produced “something new which is at the same time respectful of tradition”, and “earned the admiration of a wide and growing audience, both at home and abroad”. This is the song “Perfume” from that album: bajofondo_mardulce_portada In their outstanding second album Mar Dulce (2008), there was a clear intention to work together with other artists: Elvis Costello, Nelly Furtado, Gustavo Cerati, la Mala Rodríguez, to name a few. Maybe my preferred song of this album is “Grand Guignol” (check out this live video at the obelisco in Buenos Aires), but here I include a more “electrotango” song called “Pa’bailar” (to dance) featuring Japanese bandoneonist Ryōta Komatsu: Bajo Fondo PresentePresente, launched in 2013, is their third, more personal album; no special guests featuring this time. Bajofondo members state that their music has evolved and exceeded the limits of electronic tango, and they describe their latest album as a mixture of milonga, tango, folklore, rock, hip-hop, electronica, jazz and classical music, for his orchestral base. From this album, the song “Pide Piso” (ask for the [dance] floor) summarises very nicely this blend of sounds:   But the musicians of Bajofondo -Juan Campodónico, Luciano Supervielle, Javier Casalla, Martin Ferres, Gabriel Casacuberta, Adrian Sosa, Veronica Loza and Gustavo Santaolalla- have great energy also on stage; it’s really worth seeing them live, if you have a chance. And there is a possibility you will, since they are touring non-stop all over the world and being part of the biggest music festival worldwide. In the meantime, enjoy them here!

MY WISH LIST

Bottle wishes 14663843243_2097cd8495_kA new year always comes with some resolutions: exercise more, eat healthier, work less, travel more… Today though, instead of writing down my New Year’s resolutions, I decided to go a step further and make my Bucket list…

For those of you who never heard of it, “Bucket list” means “Things I want to do before I die”, and comes from the expression kick the bucket (to die). I prefer to give it a more cheerful connotation, therefore instead of naming it “My Bucket list” I will call it “My Wish list”…

Some of the wishes may be feasible, some others not, but who cares? Dreaming doesn’t cost anything!

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB

If we talk about Latin America these days, most likely Cuba comes first to our minds. For that reason, our virtual musical trip today will take us there, with the sounds of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club.

Havana collage

Buena Vista Social Club is a Cuban band, whose name was inspired by a 1940’s member club in La Havana. It was created in 1996 by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder, but included as well traditional Cuban musicians, who had performed at the original Club: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Ruben Gonzalez, among others.

Buena Vista Social Club bvsc_02

The recording of this band was a great success, and inspired German director Wim Wenders, who captured two live concerts in Amsterdam and New York, interviews to the musicians together with images of La Havana for a documentary, also named Buena Vista Social Club.

Both the recording and the documentary started what many called “Cubamania”, inspiring people to get acquainted with cuban music and salsa dance. Although the original band only performed live twice, some members of the original group (Guajiro Mirabal, Aguaje Ramos and Barbarito Torres) continue to perform together as a part of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, while Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa have their own group.

Here it goes then, my personal tribute to La Havana and Buena Vista Social Club with this amazing live presentation at the Carnegie Hall of New York…

ANA TIJOUX

anatijouxWe continue our musical trip within Latin America. This time our destination is Chile; the music of Ana Tijoux will get us there. Ana (or Anita) was born in 1977 in France from Chilean parents, who were exiled during Pinochet’s military dictatorship. This certainly influenced her character and her musical style: she becomes a rapper, which allows her to express her strong social and political convictions. She writes, composes and performs her own songs.

In 1993 she returned to Chile, and after some years performing in different bands and collaborations, she started her solo carrier. In 2009 she released the widely acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album 1977. The song 1977 featured, among others, in the American series Breaking Bad.

Anita Tijoux Vengo1618493_10152215792566983_546540150_nHer latest album Vengo, released early 2014, thrilled critics worldwide: “Virtually flawless” stated NPR; “Some of the most dazzling hip-hop this year” said MTV. Fair enough, Vengo just received a Grammy nomination for Best Latin album in the category Urban, rock or alternative.

Personally, I find very interesting the way she combines hip hop, traditional andean music and very thoughtful lyrics, talking about social justice, capitalism, the environment, feminism…

Recently, she was asked by the Walker Art Center to write and op-ed: the outstanding “La Cultura de la Basura” (The Garbage Culture), where she analyses, without mincing her words, misogyny and the hypersexualization of the woman’s body in the music industry.

The song I chose is called like the album, Vengo (I come) and this is a live performance at the KCRW studio.

….“I come looking for an ideal

of a world without classes that can raise, I come …

With our black hair, our high cheekbones,

With the Indian pride tattooed in our souls,

I come.”…

Located at an altitude of 1800 meters, close to the border with Switzerland, it is an excellent starting point to ski your way through the world largest international skiing area in the world, Les Portes du Soleil (the Sun’s Gates) with its 650 km of ski runs, 283 pistes and 14 interconnected ski resorts (french and swiss, which you can visit with your skis!). The village is car-free, only horse-drawn sleighs are allowed. The roads are actually ski pistes, which means that most of the chalets and apartments are “ski aux pieds”: you leave and come back to your chalet wearing your skis! Besides the many après-ski activities you can enjoy, a new hot spot, kid’s paradise (and adults too!) opened recently: the Aquariaz, a tropical indoor paradise with water games, heated swimming pools and a must for parents: an outdoor Jacuzzi! Exactly what you need to soothe your aching body after a full ski day!

Chamonix, at the foot of the Mont Blanc, is worldwide known as one of the best ski stations for off-piste skiing, with mind blowing scenery: think rocky peaks rising above glaciers and snowfields….Chamonix is best known for its legendary Vallée Blanche descent, a lifetime dream for skilled skiers: 20 km of route covering a drop in altitude of 2807 metres! It is considered to be the most beautiful off-piste of the world, covering an unforgettable descent between the Aiguille du Midi (3842m) and Chamonix Mont-Blanc (1050m), traversing a scenery of glaciers of needle-like mountains….

But if you are not fit enough to tackle the Vallée Blanche and still want to enjoy the beautiful landscape, don’t worry! Take the Aiguille du Midi cable car, Europe highest cable car. At Val Thorens the party starts early! A little detour out of the slopes is enough to enjoy la Folie Douce, that is, open air clubbing at high altitude…Of course, this is just an appetiser of what follows at night: bars and clubs with world famous DJs, live concerts, etc..

But Val Thorens is not only party, it’s also first class ski….Being the highest resort in Europe (2300 metres),  it guarantees excellent quality snow. It has an ideal location, at the top of Les Trois Vallées and surrounded by 6 glaciers… From la Cime Caron you can enjoy an amazing panoramic view over more than 1000 peaks in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps…

IF YOU WANT: SNOWBOARD DELIGHT

GO TO: TIGNES

Tignes Snowboard 5380629826_fbe36c5cb5_o

Second highest ski station of Europe, in Tignes you will find more boarders than in any other french resort, from beginners to highly skilled. Tignes hosts the Freeride World Tour, a series of events in which the best freeskiers and snowboard freeriders compete for individual event wins. Although not as picturesque as its neighbour Val d’Isère, it offers very good powder, excellent slopes and a very busy nightlife.

USEFUL TIPS

Book in advance, especially if you plan to go during Christmas time or in February during the French school break. In order to avoid unnecessary queuing, you can book your ski passes online from the site of each ski resort…

WHERE TO STAY

Chalet Alps 386488173_07401b0202_o

If you are looking for self-catered accommodation, skifrance.com  offers a great variety of apartments, chalets, ski lodges, holiday flats and holiday homes at all the ski stations…

http://en.ski-france.com

Another good option is  Pierre & Vacances,  a company that provides villages, residences and hotels in most of the ski stations, as wells as ski packs deals.

SKI LESSONS

ESF 01697700_PVI_0001_A744000_PS

The Ecole de Ski Francais (French Ski School) is a must, whether you are a first time skier or a skilled one, want private or group lessons. It is extremely well organised with its 17.000 instructors in 250 schools. Ideal for kids, who after each course, if they pass their exams, they will get their degree: from “piou piou” for the beginners up to “étoile d’or” (golden star) for the most skilled.

FOOD

Cuisine Savoyarde resized _Fotor_Collage

The cuisine savoyarde is simple but very nutritious (to recover those calories you just burnt skiing…) and is based mostly on potatoes, cheese, cured meats and sausage. Must-try: raclette savoyarde (melted cheese eaten with potatoes, sausages or cured meats),  fondue au fromage (melted cheese where small pieces of bread are dipped) and tartiflette (a pie made of cheese, potatoes, lardons and onions). You may also want to taste the tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry pie) and the liqueur de Génépi.

Do you agree with my list? Which is your favourite ski resort?

BEAUTIFUL ARGENTINA – DE USHUAIA A LA QUIACA

Iguazu 8775138259_19a743b435_oArgentina! A country that has everything, whether you like nature, culture, gastronomy, adventure, luxury, sports…

Buenos Aires, with its european tradition, its museums, theatres, restaurants. With its picturesque neighbourhoods, some bohemian, some elegant, some historical…But Argentina is not only Buenos Aires!

From Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, to La Quiaca, located on the border with Bolivia, 5121 kilometres of amazing places are waiting to be discovered: the huge blocks of ice falling from the Perito Moreno glacier; the majestic Iguazu falls surrounded by dense jungle on the border with Brazil ; the extensive Ibera wetlands with yacares, capybaras, deers and hundreds of birds species; rivers, mountains, salt deserts, vineyards, colourful mountains, lakes, eternal snows, endless sand beaches….penguins and whales, llamas and monkeys….

You like adventure? Then you won’t be disappointed! Rafting, first class skiing, trekking, parapente and kitesurf, diving and biking. Anything you need to keep your adrenaline rising….

Driven by a bit of nostalgia, and a great pride!! I prepared a slide show which (tries to) capture the natural beauty of Argentina, but also its people and traditions… The music I chose is a song by the talented Gustavo Santaolalla called “De Ushuaia a La Quiaca” (From Ushuaia to La Quiaca), and that is the way I present it, from south to north…

I intend in future to post specifically about some of the most beautiful places of Argentina in detail…

I hope you enjoy it!

BEBEL GILBERTO

gilberto-bebel-50675142e820c

Today our musical destination is Brazil, this time with the sounds of bossa nova. And for that, nothing better than the voice of Bebel Gilberto,  so amazing that it literally transports you there….

Bebel’s talent is not by chance, it’s in her genes! She is the daughter of Joao Gilberto and the Brazilian singer Miucha, and the niece of Chico Buarque… What else can we say?

As a child she had already started singing with her mother, but she became worldwide known after the release of her amazing album Tanto Tempo (2000). Since then, she released four more albums, her last one this year, called Tudo. Her songs have been featured in several films and TV series, and she was the voice of the bird Eva in the animated movies Rio and Rio 2

The video I chose is one of my favourite Bebel’s songs, it’s called Samba da Bencao. This is a live version featuring in Rio de Janeiro. The song, her voice, the musicians, the stage by the sea, Rio as a background, they are just… pure magic!!

CINEMA – THE “BEFORE…” TRILOGY

The release of the latest Linklater’s movie, Boyhood, is a good excuse to say a few words about his previous work, which happens to include three of my favourites films:

Before sunrise, Before sunset and Before midnight.

Before sunrise

BEFORE SUNRISE

Before Sunrise (1995) introduces Jesse, an american guy (Ethan Hawke), and Celine, a french girl (Julie Delpy), who meet on a train to Vienna, and a connection immediately begins between them. They both know though that this would be their only night together…

Jesse and Celine find each other again in Paris in Before Sunset (2004). It takes another nine years to discover what happened to them in Before Midnight (2013), this time in Greece.

Before Sunset

BEFORE SUNSET

In Before Sunrise, the couple was 23 years-old and full of dreams; we find them a little more mature and wiser at their 32 in Paris. In Before Midnight, they are 41, they have worries, frustrations and they seem tired. Their endless conversations about their future, dreams and ambitions have turned into talks about the problems they face and the mistakes they have made.

And there resides the beauty of this trilogy: It’s romantic, but also pragmatic. It’s not a happily ever after story, it’s what we expect would happen to every relationship after many years of coexistence…

Before midnight

BEFORE MIDNIGHT

Although I loved all three films, my favourite by far is the second one, Before Sunset. The first film is fresh and simple, but the second one is a masterpiece. The subtle dialogues, that are so natural and believable; how coincidence and fate are exposed; the long shoots as they stroll in Paris that, instead of becoming boring, they make you not want to loose your attention, not even for a second… Before midnight, in my opinion, loses a little bit of its charm when they discuss with the other couples. I believe that Hawke and Delpy achieve a better chemistry when they are alone and talking….

In conclusion, the trilogy as a whole is a must-see and I recommend you to see it in its chronological order. It’s insightful but simple, subtle but transparent, sentimental but realistic. No fancy Hollywood special effects, just feelings…
